According to the Legend, every year on the August 24th, the devil is on the loose, only returning to the sea after dark. So during the day, children bathe in “pure” water on the frigid Atlantic in order to prevent and to be cured of ailments such as fear, stuttering or epilepsy. The children are grabbed by the arm and dipped in the middle of the waves by two “Sargaceiros”, some of the elder people from the parish that participate in this tradition for more than 40 years, without reciting any word or prayer. The water that runs off of their face is cleaned, the Sign of the Cross is made in their forehead and the “bath” is repeated 3 times. After the “Holy Bath”, a Procession walks through the small parish to thank the Holy Spirit for the blessing and purity of their children.
